I had my first riding lesson in 1972, and that was it, I was both terrified and completely hooked. I ‘helped’ at the local riding school every weekend in return for free rides, and I started making womble soft toys, they were top of the pops then, to sell at school so I could raise the funds to buy a pony. My parents panicked when I had raised enough money and was on my way to talk to the local gypsies about buying a pony from them.

I ended up with Smokey Joe from the riding school, who once liberated from lessons, turned into a he devil and bucked me and my brother off at every opportunity . Since then I have always had horses although it has often been a struggle.

We have a fully licensed Clydesdale stallion, Hamish, or ‘Kinedale Louis’. Then there is Nessie , ‘Doura Prosseco’ also a Clydesdale. Bozenas Descorado, known as Desi is our PRE Andalusian and we have several of his offspring. Ella is also a PRE black Andalusian, and a bit of a drama Queen. We had her mother, Betty, but unfortunately she died of a brain tumour. She began life in Seville, so it must have been a bit of a culture shock ending up in rural Northumberland, but she took it well. She is very sadly missed.
